KAIT DUNTON is a Los Angeles based composer & pianist who eagerly defies genre boundaries with her unconventional approach to composition and to the piano trio. Her electro-acoustic group – trioKAIT – brings a fresh perspective to the classic jazz piano trio, shuffling wide-ranging influences and Kait’s innovative compositions into a refreshingly modern take on instrumental music that is as uncategorizable as it is infectious. Her third album, trioKAIT, released in July 2015 as the most added new jazz album on the JazzWeek charts and remained in the top twenty for weeks. In October, Downbeat Magazine ran a Player’s Piece on Kait and her trio, and in December, The Huffington Post included trioKAIT in their list of “The Best Jazz for 2015”. Recently, trioKAIT was featured on JAZZIZ Magazine’s “33 1/3 Anniversary” CD, along with great reviews in both the 2016 Winter and Spring editions.
Kait has been recognized on Jazz.com as one of “10 Future Female Jazz Stars” and described by Don Heckman as “an extraordinary talent on the rise” with “impressive compositional skills”. Her first album, Real & Imagined, has garnered high praise for Dunton’s writing and playing: “[Kait] throws cold water on any notion that the piano/bass/drums format is an exhausted one. It’s very much alive and well, and here is all the proof you need…” (Something Else! Reviews). In 2012, Kait released a second album of original compositions, Mountain Suite, featuring master interpreters Peter Erskine on drums, Bob Mintzer on tenor sax, John Daversa on trumpet and Darek Oles on bass. The Examiner calls Mountain Suite “…a stunning showcase of a jazz newcomer holding her own with legends”.
